I rushed to get everything BT releases. ‘Rose of Jericho’ contains what he described as harmony. Yes it’s an easy-going tune, the twinkly sounds form a state of harmony. But it lacks something. A few ordinary layers or a bit of stutter-edits aren’t going to create any complexity that I appreciate. Take a look at the five remixes. Adam K & Soha give it a mild and warm mix, but doesn’t feel any better than the original. Virtual Vault’s trance mix is barely trancey. Sultan & Ned Shepard put their signature minimal sounds and groove into it and Robbie Rivera dedicate two tricky enough mixes. They are all nice ones but feel not the right way it should be.
Just like everydody around thinks, if this is all we can expect from BT’s highly anticipated forth coming new album, we’d be rather disappointed. Then comes the second single ‘Every Other Way’. Very glad to know that an IDM/downtempo track labeled BT still take a room in the new album. And this time JES’s amazing vocal is added, making the track very different from that in This Binary Universe. Still emotionally powerful, technically beautiful, while feeling brighter 🙂 A soft guitar chord introduces JES, she goes “Is it strange, that I call you…” after plenty of sound tweaks inherited from TBU and verses of vocal, there comes a good release of all sounds. In the chorus, BT’s voice that I’m so familiar with lies under the strong leading vocal. Also I dare not to forget the accurately positioned hats that intersperse the scene. Oh what? seems like there’re remixes as well? Well I know Phunk Investigation produce quality stuff and Armin van Buuren is famous as always. But sorry, no one can surpass the original!
At this point things look rosier than before. When I finally got out of final exams, I found a game-changing thing await ahead. That is ‘Suddenly’! @thebleachworks and @BT have warmed up for long on twitter. But how was I supposed to know this entire single can be too good to be true! Our pop star BT certainly won’t abandon his rock tradition. The original is an excellent rock song in electronic music routes. And much importantly if not most, Christian Burns’ devoted high-pitch vocal is so strong and driving to fit into the energetic nature of Rock. Unexpectedly, the second mix that comes from Celldweller might even be more stunning than the original? I don’t know exactly what kind of breaks it is. As a matter of devastating fact, the fat bass and wild beat unleash themselves to wreck everything they encounter. No way to say it. I alone played it over and over again in the dorm. Can’t tell how long I danced to it tirelessly and unrelentingly. Kill me please, lol! And I’ll have to say this is almost a perfect single. It provides us with everything. Apart from rock, breaks, there’re also a Cicada Mix of a cool house track, a trance mix from a big big name Ferry Costern, a Dave Darell electro flavor mix that is pretty club-oriented, plus a rough downtempo JJ mix.
I would like to mention the cover arts as well. Love the quiet kid in ‘Rose of Jericho’ wearing a big pair of headphones with its wire winding into the water. Even more love goes to various robots in ‘Every Other Way’. Pretty cute and adorable o/ ‘Suddenly’ art is also taken from the same picture with ‘Every Other Way’, with two monks beside the robots- looks strange.
02/02/2010 is going to be a shiny day. BT- These Hopeful Machines is out on that day. From these three singles it’s safe to say this album is going to be as diverse as no one else and as massive as all his former releases combined! I’m so proud to be one of the BT fans. BT ROCKS!
